What is Open Adoption?

Most domestic adoption today is open adoption. In an open adoption, the birth mother looks through adoptive family profiles and chooses the family she would like to adopt her baby. If the birth mother and the adoptive family feel they have similar expectations and hopes for how the adoption should proceed, they are considered matched. You will agree on what time of contact or updated the birth mother will have after the adoption is final. This can range from pictures on special occasions, to shared Facebook page for updates and even visits.

The benefits of open adoption are many. Most importantly, adoption studies have determined that adopted children who understand where they came from and why they were adopted show increased feelings of self-worth, have a better sense of belonging and fewer feelings of abandonment, and feel their family has been honest with them.
For the birth mother, she does not feel that she will never see her child or know what happened to her ever again. She will feel confident she is choosing a life full of love and security for her child and she will be able to witness that through updates.

The adoptive parents benefit in many ways as well. A couple of those reasons are having medical information from the birth family will help you and your pediatrician better care for your child. You will know that you were chosen specifically to be the parents of this child by a birth mother that wants nothing but the best for her baby.

Adoption Choices

Adoptive families have many choices as they consider adoption, both large and small. Knowing what you are looking for in the beginning is a key to a smooth and successful adoption. Our adoption coordinators at our New Port Richey adoption agency are here to help you weigh what is most important and least important to you in regards to some of your choices. There are many different adoption situations out there as no two adoptions are the same. Age, race, and substance usage during pregnancy are just a few of the things you will be asked about. Other choices may have to do with medical history, gender, and ongoing contact. Taking time now to become educated on adoption through reading and speaking with others is a great way to know what you are open to. If you have questions, we are happy to answer them or talk things out with you so you know a little more about what to expect.

Domestic Adoption Requirements in Florida

In Florida, the adoption requirements vary depending on the type of adoption you are pursuing. Generally, the adoption process involves a thorough background check, home study, and legal process to ensure the prospective parents are suitable and able to provide a loving, stable home for the child.

The minimum adoption requirements in Florida, as well as in most states are:
• Must have a stable income, stable home, and be in good physical and mental health
• Pass a criminal background check and a child abuse registry check
• Complete a home study evaluation conducted by a licensed child-placing agency or other approved home study provider
• Attend pre-adoption training classes (many organizations offer these online now)

If you are pursuing international adoption or adoption through foster care, there may be additional adoption requirements.
