Adoption Encouragement: When your focus seems fuzzy

Here's some adoption encouragement for you during the waitFor many of the adoptive parents we’ve assisted through the years, the WAIT is the hardest step along a path to adoption. Sometimes the timing is the only thing standing between their desire to adopt and the moment they meet their future child.

If you’re waiting to adopt, or anticipating the wait as you plow through the first stages of preparing to adopt, stay focused on your goal ahead–your future family. You will be a blessing to a child, a birth parent, and maybe countless others along your journey. Share your story-in-progress, as you feel comfortable. BE ENCOURAGED knowing that every day you’re waiting to adopt, is a day you move closer to realizing adoption success.

To “wait,” according to Merriam’s Dictionary, is:

  • to be ready and available
  • to look forward expectantly
  • to remain stationary in readiness or expectation
  • to stay in place in expectation of

Notice the descriptions “be ready,” “look forward,” “expectation.” These are ACTIVE words. When the wait discourages you, focus on how you are actively waiting. You’re not idle in this time. Do everything you can to be “ready” to adopt, then wait in eager “expectation” for the result of your plans.

Taj Lynn was born weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and 21.5 inches long. Taj, her birth mother, and her adoptive family are all doing great!

Trusting the Lord’s Call to Adopt

called_to_adoption-200x300“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” -Philippians 4:8

An important distinction of people who succeed at adoption is that they have faith in their desires, are very intentional in their steps, and are focused on their goal. Many prospective adoptive parents look and dream about adopting but do little to move past that point. While it is wise to do research before moving on to adopt, there are many who don’t move any further to complete what they have started. Sadly, fear is often the culprit. You have to believe you will adopt!

Many years ago, I was caring for a baby who was going to be adopted. I had him in my arms and was standing outside my church after services when Grace, a woman I knew, came up to me. She was spry and cheerful at the age of 82, and she looked at the child with shining eyes.

“Babies are so wonderful,” she said. She was quiet for a time. “I wish I had known you when I was younger. I would have asked you to find a baby for me to adopt.” It turned out she and her husband were unable to have children.

Grace was a loving person who was always around children, so I had assumed she was a mother. But on that Sunday morning, I learned she had lived her whole life without the joy of sharing her love with a son or daughter. “We didn’t know what to do or where to begin,” she said. ‚So we never did have a baby.” If only someone long ago had helped her get started on the road to adoption, she would have had her little one.

If, like Grace, you are unable to have a biological child or have always wanted to adopt and with all your heart you want to love, nurture, and bring up a child, then you should set out to find the child meant for you.

Successful adoptive parents know that the timing, planning, and dedication to completing their adoption goal can make its success much easier and smoother. I believe with any goal, there are basic steps that must be taken to attain the desired end result…becoming a parent! Those who have gone before you know it takes time and patience and following a concise plan to realize adoption success.

I do believe the Lord doesn’t allow us more than we can handle and that even the obstacles or the birth mothers who change their mind are part of His plan, too. I can’t imagine not having my son, and I wouldn’t if it weren’t for the birth mother who changed her mind before I met his birth mother. Thank God He has a plan!

Is It Time to Answer the Call to Adopt?

baby feetMany feel led to adoption or a call to help others through adoption. If you question, “Why us? Why now?,” maybe the better question is, “Why not?”

Remember Jonah? He was called by God and ignored His commands because they weren’t immediately comfortable. Maybe adoption seems too expensive or too difficult. Perhaps the timing doesn’t seem right. Maybe you are putting it off until after the holidays, next year, or after the next milestone birthday.

Take time in God’s presence to discern His will for you. If you are feeling God calling you to adopt, explore your options. Learn about the types of adoption and the choices you have. Your time spent may be to fulfill an adoption plan yourself, or it may simply be so that you are armed with accurate knowledge about Christian adoption so that you are equipped to help others.

As we go through each day, sharing His love with others, there are few ways to touch people for a lifetime. Adopting a child into our lives, our hearts, and His heavenly kingdom is actively changing a life for our lifetime and for eternity.

His plans may not be for you to adopt, but rather your actions may still fulfill His plans for a child. He may need you as an instrument to affect the lives of others.
