eating for two

Question: I’ve heard that I’m eating for two during pregnancy, but I don’t want to gain too much weight. How can I make sure I only gain the right amount of weight?

Answer: Try to eat these amounts each day:

2 1/2 cups of veggies

2 cups of fruits

3 cups of dairy products

6 oz. of grains

5 1/2 oz. of meat and beans

The pounds you gain during your pregnancy will depend on your pre-pregnancy weight. Most physicians recommend that women who started at a normal weight gain about 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy, but make sure to check with your doctor. Women who were overweight pre-pregnancy may be advised to gain less, and women who were underweight may be told to gain more.

During your first trimester, you should gain one to four pounds. For the rest of your pregnancy, aim to gain just around one pound each week. Here are some tips if you’re hoping to slow your weight gain:

  • Buy low-cal, nutrient-rich foods such as low-fat milk, veggies, and fruits
  • Cut out soda, sports drinks, sweetened tea, and other sugary drinks
  • Eat the suggested amounts from each food group
