How Do I Find Just the Right Parents for My Baby?

the right parents for my baby?If you’re thinking about adoption for your baby, we understand that you might be worried about finding the perfect adoptive family. Anyone who decides adoption is the right choice wants to make sure that their child has the best life. How can you make sure that your baby receives just that?

Lifetime has developed a process of supporting women as they search for the perfect families for their babies. When you contact us for the first time, you’ll get your own individual Adoption Coordinator. She’ll help you to make sure your adoption goes just the way you want it to. That includes deciding on the perfect adoptive family for your baby. At this point, you may already know the type of adoption profiles you’re interested in looking at. Your Adoption Coordinator will help you to narrow down your preferences more by asking you questions like:

Is the location of the adoptive couple important to you?

Do you picture your baby growing up in an urban setting, or have you always dreamed of living on a farm in the Midwest? As a nationwide, full-service adoption agency, Lifetime works with families across the US. This gives you lots of choices as you consider where your child will live.

Do you want your child to have brothers or sisters?

Some women wish to place their baby with a couple who can’t conceive. Others feel that it’s important for a child to grow up with siblings. So, they look only at adoptive families who already have kids.

Does it matter to you if your child looks like his or her adoptive parents?

Some women hope to choose an adoptive family who shares their own culture and ethnicity. Fortunately, Lifetime has hopeful adoptive families of many races and backgrounds.

What values are important to you?

Are you hoping for a couple whose religious beliefs match your own? Or maybe there other values that are important to you as well, like work ethic or political beliefs.

You can explore some of the adoption profiles of families we work with, by viewing our pages of waiting adoptive families.

“Does putting my baby up for adoption make me a bad person?”

does putting my baby up for adoption make me a bad person?Question: “I’m like 99% sure that adoption’s going to be the best choice for my situation…but I’m worried what people will think. Does putting my baby up for adoption make me a bad person?”

Answer: Many women who are thinking about adoption struggle with this question. Unfortunately, lots of people are still clueless about adoption and how it works today. They may believe that a woman who places her baby is running away from their responsibilities or “taking the easy way out.”

But at Lifetime, we know it’s the exact opposite. Birth mothers are putting their child first and taking full responsibility for their child’s future.

Here’s how one birth mother puts it: “Plenty of people told me I was making a selfless and brave decision by putting my baby up for adoption. But honestly, I didn’t feel like that was true. I just thought out all my choices. Even though adoption was the best decision for my baby, it was also the best decision for me. I felt like I was selfish for wanting my old life back. I was ashamed that I couldn’t parent.

But, at the end of the day, the main reason I decided to put my son up for adoption was that I wanted him to have the best life possible. He deserved a life I couldn’t give him on my own. It wasn’t about me; it was about him!”

Birth mothers put their child’s needs before their wants and desires. It doesn’t get braver than that! They’re turning a difficult experience into something beautiful and full of love. And that is something to be proud of.

“Becoming first-time parents through adoption is our dream!”

bryan-micheleBryan and Michele just finished creating this cute video to introduce themselves and share about their dreams of adopting a baby. They’re so excited to become first-time parents through adoption!

Every other year, Bryan and Michele take a trip to Disneyland and see a NASCAR race

They’ve been married for six years, and share, “We’re both looking forward to nurturing your child into the person they will become by providing them with a great education, caring for their spirituality, and promoting their self-confidence.”  Bryan and Michele are open to sharing letters, pictures, and visits in the future with you!

As a first grade teacher, she loves to be around children and all of the children in her class adore her. Michele is looking forward to teaching our child to fish and play sports, and I know she will be a caring and loving mother!”

bryanAnd Michele says about her husband: Bryan is the sweetest man I know and is always there for our family. He loves to fish on the lake with his dad, volunteer, and cook up a great meal on the grill, especially when our friends and family are around! As a firefighter, he is always there to help those in need and enjoys every moment.

Bryan is looking forward to tucking our child in every night and celebrating the holidays together as a family. He will raise our child to be a wonderful person and will be there for him or her every step of the way.”

Get Info on Your Choices With Open Adoption

Lifetime shares info on your choices with open adoptionWhen you make an open adoption plan with Lifetime, you’re in the driver’s seat. You have lots of choices, including your baby’s adoptive parents, how things will be handled at the hospital, and how much contact you’d like after the placement. Today, we’re going to give you some quick info on the three major choices with open adoption!

  1. Select the Adoptive Family for Your Baby
  2. This is one of the most important choices with open adoption. We’ll ask you what you’re looking for in parents for your baby. Maybe you’re hoping that they live in a certain area of the country, or maybe you’re looking for a couple who don’t have any children yet. Your Adoption Coordinator at Lifetime will mail or email you profiles all about the adoptive families that fit what you’re looking for. In the profile booklets, you can see photos and learn about their careers, parenting style, interests, and many other things. If you’d like to look at couples now, you can browse our hopeful adoptive family websites.

Once you pick your favorite adoptive couple, you can interview them over the phone. We encourage you to ask them questions about topics important to you and get to know them better.

  3. Plan Your Hospital Stay
  4. You have the choice of how things are handled during your hospital stay for delivery. Here are some things to think about:

    • Who is allowed to be at the hospital when you deliver?
    • Would you like your baby in the room with you? Would you like your baby to stay in the nursery by the adoptive couple?
    • Once it’s time to check out, would you like to leave first, or should the adoptive couple leave first?
    • Would you like a copy of the newborn pictures the hospital takes?

  5. Determine Future Contact
  6. Another major one of your choices with open adoption involves how much contact you’ll have after placement. The relationship you have with your child and the adoptive family can run a wide range of options. Some women choose to have a very open adoption and get updates on their child through photos, emails, and visits. Other women are fine with not having visits and get updates on social media instead.

Along with your child’s adoptive parents, you’re able to determine the amount and type of future contact you’d like to keep!

Whenever you’re ready to start learning more about your choices with open adoption, you can call Lifetime at 1-800-923-6784.
